Things That Annoy Me

Bike thieves are the lowest of low scum!

Smokers who ash / throw butts out the window of their car.  There's nothing quite like ash coming back and hitting you in the face as you ride down the freeway.  I've often thought I should pull up beside them and spit in their window.  If they can ash in my environment why shouldn't I spit into theirs?

Politicians who bash unions.  Union bashing is fairly common these days but when politicians do it I get really annoyed.  Politicians claim to represent the people, some even claim to represent "the battler".  Well, what's a union?  Unions are made up of, and represent workers!  So when politicians bash unions, they are bashing the people they are supposed to represent.

Students who think paying HECS should buy them a free ride.  We often hear students complaining about university and wanting everything handed to them on a silver platter because they are "paying for it" through HECS.  Well, firstly, HECS is only 20% of the currently funded cost of providing tertiary education so they are paying bugger all for it and if it were properly funded the HECS amount would be a much smaller proportion.  Secondly, we live in a market economy, so if they don't like what they're getting where they are, they can take their HECS and go somewhere else!

Journalists who let politicians get away with racism.  Australia is the only country ever to have its Government condemned as racist by the United Nations.  The 1998 Land Rights Act and the Mandatory Sentencing laws (that have resulted in black imprisonment rates worse than apartheid South Africa) are two recent examples of Government racism.  Yet this is rarely mentioned in the media.  More recently, the Government's treatment of refugee boat people has been outrageous.  Massive Government spending (when education and health are so badly under funded) to block, at the most, a few hundred poor displaced desperate people when there are some 55,000 people (mostly from the UK and USA) overstaying their visas in this country illegally and almost nothing is spent on catching and deporting these proven criminals.  This is purely a distinction based on race and is designed to win the vote of rednecks.  Governments should be leading the way to reduce racism and journalists should be too.

Second year syndrome.  Whether it is Grade 2, Grade 9 or second year at university, they've done a year and they think they know it all.

People who knock the banks.  I am not particularly a supporter of the banks (lets face it, you lend them money and pay for the privilege and they lend it back to you and you pay heaps for the privilege).  However, the current situation regarding banks' fees, charges and lack of service in this country is the direct result of privatisation of the Commonwealth Bank and deregulation of the banking sector.  Wake up Australia, this is what economic rationalism gives you.

People who complain about paying tax.  Australia is one of the lowest taxed countries in the OECD (the developed world).  We should be paying more tax, not less.  That way our Government services might be properly funded and we would all benefit!
